Our new ‘Adopt a Book’ programme is an excellent way to support Chawton House Library and our work here.

Our aim is to have secured 2,017 ‘adoptions’ by the end of 2017 – a momentous year for bibliophiles everywhere, since it will be the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death.

John Turner, a longstanding local supporter of Chawton House Library, has recently given this initiative a significant boost. John has donated £2,500 for a bespoke adoption of our first edition of Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey in memory of his wife Jean. He was assisted in his selection by our Librarian Dr Darren Bevin. John’s words to accompany his ‘adoption’ are: ‘In loving memory of Jean Turner 1938-2014. A beautiful mind and the gentle loving wife of John’. John has therefore ‘adopted’ 150 books towards our target of 2,017 by 2017 – and we are extremely grateful to him.

Thank you John for this tribute to Jean, and for your support!
