Trustees
We are currently seeking new trustees for 3-year terms of office to include 4 meetings a year. As a Trustee of Chawton House, you will collaborate with board colleagues and the executive team to shape, deliver, and promote the charity’s strategic objectives. You will act as a critical friend, supporting the strategic and business planning efforts, and serve as an ambassador for the organization. Your responsibilities will include overseeing the financial performance of the charity, ensuring proper preparation and submission of audited accounts, and contributing to the development of key policies. You will also offer your expertise and experience at board meetings and on occasional trustee projects and committees.

Assistant Curator
6-month fixed term position, 0.6FTE.
The Assistant Curator will play a key role in managing and caring for the Chawton House collection and library, while supporting the ongoing development of our exhibitions and research services. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in collections management within a small but dynamic heritage team. Working closely with the Deputy Director and a dedicated team of library volunteers, this role will contribute to future strategic planning for collections development and assist with the planning, curation, and installation of the flagship Jane Austen 250 exhibition and associated programming.

Kitchen Assistant
6-month fixed term position, 25 hours per week. Applicants must live in the administrative district of East Hampshire.
This role is responsible for some daily service and assisting with food production at Chawton House. Food service is primarily focused on a daytime offer in the Old Kitchen Tea Room, a takeaway offer from the Tea Shed, and tour and event catering (primarily themed suppers, BBQ or cream/afternoon teas). As this has been a growing and successful part of the operation, there is scope to vary and expand the offer.

Garden Assistant
6-month fixed term position, 19.5 hours per week. Applicants must live in the administrative district of East Hampshire.
This new role is to assist the Head Gardener as Chawton House begins the exciting next phase of the restoration of the historic gardens and the continued expansion of our garden public programme. The gardens have been transformed since 2020 to now nationally-recognised standards. This role will be hands-on using some garden machinery and taking on a breadth of horticultural tasks to uphold our high standards, working alongside a dedicated volunteer team to maintain the grounds, kitchen and herb gardens. The post-holder will assist with growing plants from seed, propagating cuttings, and working with the Events team and Head Gardener on a new garden event programme. The Garden Assistant will also support the Head Gardener and work as part of the team which will embark on the restoration of the Walled Garden for Jane Austen’s 250th celebrations in 2025, and work with the whole team on community planting days.
