Compiled on behalf of Thomas Knight for his sister, it is a fascinating example of the manuscript cook books kept by women in charge of households.
The book was composed at the time of an important milestone in the history of female literacy, as more women were now able to write down and read ‘receipts’ for cooking and home medicine.
