Description
A View of Chawton
Mellichamp, c1740
This magnet features Chawton House as it was in the 18th century. The former gardens in the foreground were altered during the latter part of the century. Edward Austen Knight and his predecessors worked to create more naturalistic landscaped gardens, similar to those familiar to today’s visitors. The Mellichamp painting hangs in the Tapestry Gallery at Chawton House and features a tiny piece of graffiti – Jane Austen’s niece Mary Jane Austen, daubed her name in ink in 1819!
Magnet comes cellophane wrapped with presentation backing card.
