What are we doing to keep visitors safe?

We look forward to welcoming you all to Chawton House as usual, but we will continue to prioritise the safety of our visitors, volunteers and staff.

For a better and more relaxed visitor experience and guaranteed entry to the house, we are keeping our pre-booking system in place and encouraging social distancing as well as the use of hand sanitisers.

Please see below for more information on how we will continue to do our best to keep you all safe. Thank you so much for your support and we look forward to welcoming you all to Chawton House.

  • Pre-booked timed entry to the House, split into 15 minute slots. Pre-booking online closes at midnight but we also have walk-up tickets available on the day. For half term and bank holidays, we recommend that you book in advance to avoid disappointment
  • We have introduced enhanced cleaning regimes in the House and Old Kitchen Tearoom
  • There are hand sanitising stations at key points across the site
  • Ventilation throughout the House is improved through open doors and windows
  • Staff and volunteers are practicing social distancing
  • Staff are encouraged to make use of lateral flow covid tests

Chawton House

Free parking is available on the main road when the dead end car park (operated by Chawton Parish Council) is closed. Please drive through the village to get as close as you can to the bottom of our driveway.

There is another car park in the village (opposite Jane Austen’s House). Both car parks are free of charge.

There are some accessible parking spaces behind Chawton House, please contact us on 01420541010 or to let us know if you require these at the time of your booking.

Park your car as normal, taking care around others. Tickets will be checked at an admissions desk located on the driveway.

If there is a queue to the admissions desk please keep 2 metres away from others.

When it is your turn, you will be called forward by a member of staff. Please have your name and any relevant membership cards or passes ready. To minimise contact, our staff will not take these from you so please show them at a distance.

Once you have been admitted, please follow the one-way route marked by arrows. Hand sanitiser is available. Please be mindful that we are a charity and supplies are limited so only take what you need.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation in ensuring you, those around you and Chawton House stays safe.

Dogs are welcome in all outside areas but must be kept on a short lead. There is a water bowl in the courtyard if they get thirsty, and dog treats are available from the Old Kitchen Tearoom. We ask all dog owners to clean up after them and use the dog bins provided.

The outside toilets are accessible and will be open for visitors to use at their own risk.

The toilets will be cleaned at the start of each day and hand-washing facilities and sanitiser will be replenished. To allow for safe social distancing, we will only allow one visitor at a time into the ladies toilets – despite their being 3 cubicles. Please queue outside by the markers.

The Old Kitchen Tearoom and Courtyard are open Saturday – Sunday, 10am-3.30pm. Last orders are at 3pm.

We will be operating a table service with visitors able to order food and drinks on a first come first serve basis. Please note, indoor diners are restricted to groups of 6. We offer seating for larger groups in our Courtyard.

You can also purchase food and drink for takeaway at the Parkland Pantry, outside the Chawton House gates. See below for details.

Alternatively, why not order cakes from the tearoom to be delivered by post from our house to yours?

The Tea Shed is open Friday – Sunday 10am – 3pm (except during extreme weather).

Serving a selection of hot and cold drinks, cakes and light lunches. Please maintain a safe social distance from others.
