Step into the kitchens of the past with these cookery challenges. Throughout our HomeMade Histories exhibition, we’ll be sharing local Chawton recipes drawn from the Knight and Hinton family cookbooks, inviting you to recreate them at home and discover the flavours, techniques and curiosities of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century cooking.
If you enjoy baking, why not try Bath Caraway Cakes or Portugal Cakes. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, have a go at mushroom ‘Katchup’ – similar to soy sauce, or Artificial Asses Milk – a vegetarian alternative to donkey’s milk, which was once valued for its supposed health-giving properties and often recommended for coughs and other ailments. We thought it might be a little more appealing than another historical remedy found in the period: snail milk!
If you try any of our recipes, we’d love to see the results. Share your creations with us on social media and let us know how they turned out using the hashtag #ChawtonRecipes
