If you are using the Reading Room at Chawton House for a research trip, Riversdown House provides comfortable accommodation nearby.
Riversdown House is a manor house originally dating from 1328. It is located in the beautiful rolling hills of Jane Austen Country, the landscape that inspired her so much, and is only 20 minutes by car (14 miles) away from Chawton. From 1814 onwards, the owner of Riversdown was Penelope Lutley Sclater, who was not only a previous neighbour and acquaintance but also one of the small circle of people personally asked by Jane Austen to review her books, in this case Emma.
The interior of Riversdown House is cosy, traditional and inspiring. You really can feel the history. Each bedroom has its own unique character and some of the rooms look out over the beautiful garden where native flowers, herbs and vegetables are still grown to this day.
The lounge and dining room are friendly, welcoming spaces where stories and experiences have been shared in good spirit across the centuries, perhaps in front of a roaring fire. There are also quiet places ideal for private reading and reflection.
The grounds contain a golf course, gym, sauna house, tennis courts, an outside swimming pool and lovely short walks with extensive views of the beautiful South Downs countryside. Moreover, there is easy access to several traditional gastro-pubs in nearby villages too.
The price for one of our double rooms is £100 – £125 per night, including a continental breakfast.
Other meals can be provided on request: Lunch £10 and Dinner £20 (three courses)
