Explore Chawton House on one of these special after hours tours. Discover the house’s hidden history, hear stories of the Austen and Knight families and learn about the women writers in our collection.

This will be a chance to soak up the atmosphere after hours and meet the curatorial team behind the newly hung galleries. The tour will take you on a journey of Chawton House, starting with the story of the Knight family who built the Elizabethan manor house, Jane Austen’s brother Edward who inherited it and Jane Austen herself, who spent much time here and referred to it as ‘the Great House’. Upstairs, you’ll see the portraits which represent the library collection of 9,000 volumes of rare early women’s writers and hear about their fascinating lives.
