Welcome back to Chawton House Library Conversations. First launched on Sunday 8 March 2015 in celebration of International Women’s Day, our monthly podcast is a round up of news, events and highlights, helping you stay connected with Chawton House Library wherever you are.
This month, we hear from Dr Penelope Cave and Dr Katrina Faulds who gave an evening concert in November. They discuss their research on the Jerningham family, an elite Roman Catholic family who wrote letters to each other in the eighteenth century.
We also hear from our new Director of Fundraising, Jane Lillystone. She discusses her role here and our new fundraising campaign #FickleFortunes, which is raising funds for our summer 2017 exhibition. The exhibition will bring together Jane Austen and Germaine de Staël, 200 years after their death, as well as exploring the nature of celebrity and how fortunes change with time.
Gillian Dow tells us more about Staël, who was the global literary celebrity of Europe in her time, rather than Jane Austen. To hear what Staël’s one word review of Pride and Prejudice was, listen to the podcast!
