Discover more about this year’s festive theme at Chawton House, open to visit from 1 December to 2 January.

Every year we decorate Chawton House for Christmas, bringing festive cheer to every room of the House for you to enjoy during your visit. In May 2021, the volunteer Christmas Committee came together to decide on a theme for this year’s display and took inspiration from the tradition of manor houses- like Chawton House- being decorated with homemade arts and crafts, with wreaths and foliage taken from across the estate for the festive season. After nine months of hard work, the Christmas Committee has created over 100 works of art and craft, all celebrating the idea of a handmade Christmas.

From the leather wreath decorating the front door when you arrive to the logs taken from the estate that have now been transformed into Father Christmas and his reindeer, all the decorations you see have been made from scratch, using materials that can be found around the home or garden. An homage to all forms of craft, the decorations on display include examples of crochet, paper craft, tatting, woodwork, flower making and candle making and are sure to delight visitors of all ages.

At the heart of this year’s Christmas display is the festive installation The Twelve Knits of Christmas. Bringing to life the iconic Christmas carol, knitted versions of each day can be found throughout the House, with a special festive trail helping you to note down where you have spotted them. Don’t miss the twelve drummers’ drumming, some of whom have disappeared for their lunch, and the nine ladies dancing for some of our famous women writers.

Thank you to the incredibly talented volunteer Christmas Committee for all of their hard work over the last nine months and for everything they have created for us to enjoy this Christmas.
