Saturday 16th May 2026

Venue: Chawton House

11am – 3pm, break for lunch at 1pm, Billiards Room.

Spend a few hours making a beautiful image inspired by the landscape, literature and imagination at Chawton House.

Join local artist Kate Davis in this workshop is inspired by the gardens and literary history associated with Chawton House.
In this creative workshop, we will transform the printed page into something delicate and new. Using pages from a book (or  photocopies), you will cut, shape and compose your own small paper sculpture — a rose in bloom, with a flurry of butterflies flying out from the printed page caught mid-flight. Using pencils, pen and watercolours, you will add colour, detail and movement, bringing a certain lightness and life to the words beneath.
You can also choose a line from a favourite book, or write a personal message of your own. A sentence or two can be carefully woven through your artwork, tracing the imagined path of your butterflies as they lift and drift out from the page.
During the workshop, you will layer paper and paint, text and image — cutting petals from printed prose, shaping wings from paragraphs, and drawing or painting butterflies on the page itself. The finished piece will be both artwork and keepsake: a celebration of words in motion.
No previous experience is needed — only enthusiasm in the pleasure of making!
You will have a half an hour break for lunch at 1pm, so please feel free to bring your own food, or purchase your lunch from our tearoom.

Tickets: £25pp including House and Gardens entry, all materials and refreshments.
