Start your year feeling good, getting out of the house, and trying something new!

Over the last weekend of January, we have something new for kids, adults and anyone that wants to take part in the wide array of events lined up!

Friday 26 January: Volunteering Morning

10am – 12:30pm, Volunteer Recruitment Drive, The Great Hall

We are giving visitors the opportunity to come and chat with our knowledgeable House, Collections and Garden volunteers about what it’s like to volunteer at Chawton House. There will be the opportunity to grab a free tea or filter coffee whilst you chat. Free to attend, although you will need to purchase a House & Gardens ticket if you’d like to look round afterwards.

 

Saturday 27 January: Try Something New

In the House…

10.30am-12.30pm, Creative Knitting Drop-In, The Great Hall

Join our talented volunteer Maggie, who will be guide you through basic stitches and how to follow patterns in this creative knitting tutorial. Included in House and Gardens admission.

 

In the Gardens…

10.30-11.30am and 1-2pm, Orchard Pruning Session

Led by our Head Gardener Julia, help assist in fruit pruning in the Orchard in our Walled Garden. Maximum of 5 participants per session, first come first serve basis. Meet in the orchard in the walled garden. Bring appropriate clothing and footwear. If possible, please bring a pair of secateurs. Included in Gardens admission.

11.30am, Gardens Guided Walk

Explore the beautiful grounds of Chawton House with one of our knowledgeable guides, and discover the history of the Gardens whilst you take in the Walled Garden, Wilderness and stunning views across the Parkland. Free with Gardens admission, maximum of 15 people, first come first serve basis. Meet outside the front entrance to the House on the turning circle.

2.15pm, Parkland & Village Circuit Walk

Blow off the cobwebs and take a Guided Walk through the Parkland. Join Chief Exec Katie Childs on a relaxed walk across the south Parkland, taking in sweeping views of Chawton House and learning all about the rich history of the Estate. Free with Gardens admission, maximum of 15 people, first come first serve basis. Meet by the Tea Shed on the drive.

 

Sunday 28 January: Family Day

Fun for all the family, with new kids trails inside and outside:

  • Gardens & Parkland I-spy trail
  • House Heraldry trail: design your own coat of arms

10.30am-12.30pm, Garden Birdwatch

Take part in the RSPB Bird Garden Birdwatch. Simply collect your bird ID guide and checklist from the house and pick a spot in the gardens for an hour to help us to record all the birds that visit Chawton House. Once finished, please return your checklist to us where all bird sightings will be collated and uploaded to the Big Garden Birdwatch!
