A Regency Christmas at Chawton House

From 21 November, travel back to Jane Austen’s time and join us for a Regency Christmas at Chawton House.

Be welcomed into the Great Hall by our elegant Regency household, where the butler and maid will greet arriving “guests” and take hats, gloves, and outerwear as was customary. Children (and the young at heart!) can join in by making traditional paper chains to add to the festive décor. In the Dining Room, the table is laid for a refined Regency Christmas feast, with seasonal savouries and sweetmeats set out in the style of the early 19th century. Upstairs, discover the tradition of Boxing Day in the Tapestry Gallery. The Oak Room celebrates Regency entertainments with a magical tableau inspired by the world of Harlequinade — spot Harlequin, Columbine, and Pierrot as they prepare for a festive performance. Spot the Twelve Knits of Christmas in the Long Gallery , and round off your time with a visit the Library to explore how Christmas is represented in our women’s writing collection.

Little ones can enjoy dressing up in Regency costumes and accessories, and throughout the House you’ll find seasonal greenery, candlelit charm, and touches of Austen-inspired elegance to capture the warmth, wit, and sociability of a Regency Christmas.

The Old Kitchen Tearoom will be serving delicious festive treats, including homemade mince pies and festive hot chocolate, while the Shop will be filled with seasonal delights and stocking fillers to help with your Christmas shopping.
