“On Curating HomeMade Histories: wormholes, story-hunting & the pleasures of ink”
Join Deputy Director and curator Kim Simpson for a behind-the-scenes exploration of HomeMade Histories: Letters, Art & Embroidery. Part curator’s tour, part deep dive into the stories behind the objects, this talk follows some of the unexpected research trails, tantalising clues and historical wormholes that emerged while putting the exhibition together.
From trying out the most disgusting recipes in the collection to sleepless nights scouring ancestry for a lost husband, Kim’s talk covers irate letters, scrapbook treasures (including one roly-poly cat), and the breathtaking artwork of an 8-year-old girl. Discover the women whose lives surface between the lines of our manuscripts, and explore the pleasures – and occasional frustrations – of story-hunting in the Chawton House collection.
