Part of the East Hants Literary Festival, Creative Footsteps, join a knowledgeable guide on a tour the Chawton House estate, set within a scenic Parkland, almost as rich in history as the House itself. Find out more about the fascinating history of the grounds, including the ‘wilderness’, the ‘ha-ha’ and the additions made by Jane Austen’s brother, Edward Austen, later Knight.  

Take in the views of Chawton House across the Parkland, visible through the Wilderness and South Lawn and learn about the abundant flora and fauna tucked away within the Hampshire countryside. 

Please note that this activity will go ahead whatever the weather – stout footwear and appropriate outdoor clothing is essential!

About Creative Footsteps: 

Between 2 and 10 October the area’s first Nature and Literary Festival will celebrate local literary greats and their love of the East Hampshire countryside.  Follow in the footsteps of author Jane Austen, our first ecologist and naturalist Gilbert White, the wartime poet Edward Thomas and more. You can enjoy short guided nature walks, writing and poetry workshops, garden tours, trails, Yoga and more.

Thank you for purchasing a ticket to this event. Please meet your guide by the tea shed on the drive just before 10am. Parking is free and available on the road. 

There is no need to bring a ticket with you to this event, your name will be on a guestlist which we will check at the door – help us save paper by not printing anything off. 

Access requirements: 

Although not a challenging walk, the tour will take place entirely outside with no opportunity to sit down and will last approximately 90 minutes. Being in fields, the ground is uneven and muddy with some steps over stiles. Visitors are advised to take extra care, wear warm clothes and wear stout walking boots.
