Monday 3rd November 2025
Venue: Chawton House
11am-12.15pm
Embrace your passion for dead leaves and step into the landscape Jane Austen knew and was inspired by on a guided autumn estate walk.

Led by a member of our Curatorial Team, you’ll explore the paths Austen herself trod—routes that inspired her writing and scenes that appear in the pages of her novels.
Autumn held a special place in Austen’s imagination. In Persuasion, Anne Elliot savours ‘the last smiles of the year upon the tawny leaves and withered hedges,’ and Austen’s letters often recall walks taken despite cold weather and dirty lanes.
On your walk with us, you’ll hear about Austen’s own walks, but also how she used both walking and the features of the landscape in her works to build characters and bring them together. We finish back in the Courtyard, where you can enjoy a tea or filter coffee to round off the morning.
Please note:
- This activity will go ahead whatever the weather – stout footwear and appropriate outdoor clothing are essential!
- This walk takes place during a closed day and therefore the House will not be open to visitors, and the Old Kitchen Tearoom is not open.
Tickets: £10 (includes Tea/Filter coffee)
