‘I never saw daffodils so beautiful. They grew among the mossy stones about and above them; some rested their heads upon these stones, as on a pillow, for weariness; and the rest tossed and reeled and danced, and seemed as if they verily laughed with the wind, that blew upon them over the lake; they looked so gay, ever glancing, ever changing.’
Dorothy Wordsworth describing daffodils, 15 April 1802
This International Women’s Day join us for a Spring Poetry Walk through the beautiful gardens here at Chawton House.
Stroll around the gardens with one of our knowledgable volunteers, stopping at some of the most beautiful spots in the grounds, and enjoy the spring flowers that are beginning to bloom. Spot the golden daffodils, beautiful crocuses, and many other spring flowers that decorate the grass and enjoy readings from botanical poetry and works, performed by our very own Sasha Dean.
Readings include extracts from Dorothy Wordsworth’s diary and poetry written by Cordelia Skeeles, Anne Finch, Countess of Wilchelsea, and Charlotte Smith.
This is the perfect walk for those who love spring flowers, women’s writing, and Chawton House.
