We are proud to announce that this year – in addition to our usual visiting fellowships – we are also offering six named fellowships supported by literary societies and individuals.
The new fellowships will be officially launched at a celebratory event on International Women’s Day, 8th March 2015.
The Chawton House Library fellowship scheme now offers unparalleled support for the study of women’s writing in an environment that is exceptionally conducive to this work.
Applications are invited from writers, journalists, academics and independent scholars to study writing, from Jane Austen, Frances Burney, Maria Edgeworth and the Brontë sisters, to Vera Brittain and women writing on war. All in a location which, in many cases, is historically relevant and – above all – gives tranquillity and space, ‘a room of one’s own’, to research and uncover new insights.
Executive Director, Dr Gillian Dow, says, ‘We are delighted, and extremely grateful, for the support to make this happen. These fellowships are unique in their focus on women through the ages and have the potential to have a transformative effect on the study of women’s writing.’ Successful applicants will have accommodation and space to work at Chawton House Library, along with access to both electronic and archival resources at Hartley Library at the University of Southampton.
