Thursday 1st October 2026

Venue:

Explore our precious 1746 map of London with an eminent historian and get a private ”tour” of the Georgian streets; you can also book on to stay for a roast dinner and hear about nightlife in 18th-century London.

5:30pm – 7:00pm

Join historian, London expert, and English Heritage veteran Steven Brindle to explore one of Chawton’s most unique treasures: our 1746 map of London created by surveyor John Rocque. The remarkably detailed map, printed in 26 sheets, decorates an 8-panel screen in Chawton’s tapestry gallery and is the topic of a new book, London in the 18th Century. (Copies will be available for purchase on the evening.) There are only a handful of examples in the world of the map mounted as a complete set. Guests will gather in the great hall for a glass of wine or a soft drink and nibbles while Steven Brindle explains why this treasure is so important. You’ll then have the opportunity to go upstairs to take a close look at the map, with Steven there to answer your questions.

Tickets for drinks and the talk: £15

7:30pm – 9:00pm

Why not stay for dinner? Book a ticket for the talk and dinner to stay for a classic English roast, followed by Georgian sherry trifle, in our historic kitchens. Steven Brindle will add to the historic atmosphere with some comments on nightlife in the London of the Roque Map. Drinks will be available to purchase.

Tickets for the talk with dinner: £45
