With a three-day weekend to enjoy, we have lots to do at Chawton House to keep the entire family entertained.
Scroll down to find out more about what’s happening at Chawton House this weekend.
Discover A Costume of Sport
Visit our latest exhibition on its opening weekend and take a look at ladies sporting dress, from riding to cricket, sea-bathing to walking as you learn about the sports women played in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. You can also learn more about the different sports played here at Chawton House by the Austen and Knight family.
Spot The Borrowers
Enter the world of Mary Norton’s much-loved children’s book The Borrowers as we celebrate the seventieth anniversary of its publication. Opening on Saturday 30 April, The Borrowers Return to Chawton House will have you searching for signs of tiny people living beneath the floorboards and behind the furniture before you have the opportunity to experience what life would be like if you were five inches tall.
Don’t miss the display of stills from the 1992 BBC television series, filmed here at Chawton House, and compare how the House looks today with its television appearance thirty years ago.
Take A Stroll in the Countryside
May marks the start of National Walking Month and there’s nowhere better (in our opinion!) for a walk then our stunning Gardens and Parkland. Stroll through the historic Gardens and spot the colourful tulips that are growing in the Walled Garden, the delicate bluebells that decorate the path through the Wilderness, and maybe even stop and enjoy a moment of peace underneath the blossom.
Bring along your four-legged friends and explore the historic Gardens before enjoying one of our wider estate walks through the picturesque countryside.
Treat Yourself to Something Tasty
Don’t forget to visit the Old Kitchen Tearoom for something delicious to eat. Whether you treat yourself to lunch, a slice of cake, or maybe even an ice cream in the sunshine, you are sure to find something to tempt your taste buds.
Now available to purchase from the Old Kitchen Tearoom is our limited edition Chawton House Cider, made using apples grown on the Chawton House estate and perfect for a sunny afternoon.
Take Home a Souvenir of Your Visit
No day at Chawton House is complete without a visit to our Shop. Browse the bookshelves for your next read, challenge yourself by purchasing our Library Jigsaw, or spoil yourself to something beautiful from our new collaboration with Tatty Devine. Inspired by the fascinating women writers whose works can be found in our collection, the range includes fun and original pendants, earrings and brooches.
