Imagine buying a book, but being able to choose its cover.

This was the case for the first 350 years of book production. In the handpress era (up until the early 19th century), a book’s cover was not determined by its publisher, but by either th bookseller or its eventual owner. As a result, every bookbinding was an individually-made object and essential unique.

Join our Curator and Collections Manager Emma Yandle for an exclusive Winter lunchtime Library talk on book bindings, showcasing some of the most elaborate and beautifully-bound works in our collection.

Ticket cost: £17 (this includes entry to the House and Gardens) | £5 for Annual Ticket & Neighbour Pass Holders
